So what’s involved with search engine optimization?
Search engine optimization is one of those things that is in some regards very simple and its concept. It can be very complicated in its application though 🙂
Let’s give you the basics of what’s involved:
Keyword research
Keyword research is the process of identifying what term is relevant to your business people search for most. For instance, if you’re a chiropractor in CITY, we want to know if “CITY chiropractors” gets searched more or “chiropractors in Toronto”.
Keyword research is important as it helps us set the appropriate goals from day one. You might be surprised at what keywords generate search traffic on a monthly basis.
Website optimization
Website optimization is the process of making sure there are no issues on your website preventing Google from understanding that you’re there and properly crawling and indexing your website.
Additionally, it involves making sure that the best keywords (High monthly search volumes) are highly relevant in your website. This doesn’t mean jamming the keyword in 300 times on the website… But it does mean peppering it throughout the website and understanding which locations create more relevance for Google.
Link building
Google has quite a task figuring out who’s who for any given keyword. Again, if you were chiropractor in Toronto, how is Google to believe that you’re the best chiropractor? Every chiropractor in Toronto says they are the best 🙂
Google solution to this is to identify how many times around the web and how frequently they see your website referenced. Specifically, we are talking about links. This is simply when somebody puts a clickable link on their website pointing to your website. This could come in many forms:
- Maybe you have a happy client who lists you on his resources page.
- Maybe somebody mentions you on their blog.
- Maybe an employee has a personal website and references you.
- Maybe you are mentioned by a happy customer on Facebook.
- A listing in a web directory is a link.
Links come in all shapes and sizes but they all have one thing in common… Google sees them as votes for your website.
So to summarize, if we get other legitimate websites to link to your website on an ongoing basis, Google sees your website as popular and will rank you higher and their search engine for the keywords your website is optimized for.
